  • Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens

Temporary closure of pedestrian access to the Lake islands

Following heavy visitor use over the spring and summer period, the Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden's Lake Islands have been temporarily closed to all pedestrian access.

Excess foot traffic causes the island's fragile grass cover to compact and die.  This causes the exposed bare soil to harden, which presents an increased visitor risk.

The islands are temporarily closed each year (during the wetter months), to allow them to repair and rehabilitate.

Pedestrian access to the islands is expected to re-open from Friday 1 September 2023.

    Dog Friendly Parks

The wet and warmer weather has brought paralysis ticks out in record numbers. Paralysis ticks are known in Coastal and near by Coastal areas and rainforest gullies.

Keep your dog on lead in permitted parks

Dogs are permitted in many parks and reserves provided they are under control and on leads at all times. Visitors should keep their dog on-lead except in designated off-lead areas. Keeping your dog on a lead ensures you both have a safe park visit.
    • Poison baits may be laid to control foxes or other feral animals. Baits can be fatal to dogs.
    • Even if your dog is friendly, other dogs may not be.
    • Your dog can catch parasites (such as fleas and ticks) from wildlife.
    • Snake bites are a real risk in natural areas such as parks.
    • Wildlife such as kangaroos and koalas will defend themselves if threatened by a dog and can cause significant injury to or the death of your dog.

    Dog-friendly code of conduct

    • Consider other park users and ensure that dogs are always kept under effective control.
    • Always carry a lead, even when in off-lead areas.
    • Bring a friend if you wish to walk with more than two dogs.
    • Ensure children are supervised whilst near dogs, as they are vulnerable to attack.
    • Ensure your dog’s identification, registration and vaccinations are up to date.
    • Minimise any disturbance to native fauna, including birdlife in the park.
    • Clean up after your dog and take all rubbish home.

    Blanket Bay - Bush Rats

Following the success of our fox and feral cat management programmes population numbers of Rattus fuscipes have grown again in the Blanket Bay campground area of the Great Otway National Park.

The combination of less predators and conducive weather conditions has allowed a population to return that campers at Blanket Bay should be cautious of.

The Bush rat has some specific features that can help you distinguish it from similar rats.
    ·         It has pointed head and rounded ears.
    ·         Its tail is smaller than the rat's body.
    ·         Another key feature is their front teeth - they are chisel-shaped with hard yellow enamel.

These native rodents are known to scavenge on campers’ food, gnawing through tents to get to uncontained foodstuffs.

Native bush Rats are protected wildlife in the National Park and may form part of your camping  experience while camping at Blanket Bay.

  • Local Port of Port Campbell

    Port Campbell Jetty Closure

Works are being undertaken at the Port Campbell Jetty Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th of June 2023 subject to weather and swell conditions.

New light poles and lights heads are being installed to replace the current structures which have reached the end of their serviceable life.

The local port, including jetty and crane will be closed at the entrance to all port users. There will be no access for vessel launching or pedestrians all day Wednesday 7th and Thursday 8th June as contractors require the whole site for the works. The closure will continue to be in place overnight on Wednesday as there will be no operational lighting at the site.

Boat Bay may provide alternative vessel access during this time.

Lower Landing closure Port Campbell jetty

The lower landing at the Port Campbell jetty will be closed from Friday 5th May, as a recent independent engineering inspection found it is unsafe and needs to be replaced.

Vessel launching and retrieving via the crane is not impacted by the lower landing closure and remains open and accessible.

The upper deck of the jetty remains open and accessible for community and visitor use.

Passengers on vessels, and swimmers wishing to enter/exit the water at the jetty will need to use the ladder at the crane.

We know this will be disappointing for people who use the lower landing, but it has reached the end of its serviceable life in the Southern Ocean conditions and poses a serious risk to public safety.

Parks Victoria has started design work for a replacement lower landing and will keep the community informed about how it progresses over the coming months.

We thank you for your understanding as we work towards providing a safe local port.

  • Port Campbell Bay

Parks Victoria has started design work for a replacement lower landing and will keep the community informed about how it progresses over the coming months.

We thank you for your understanding as we work towards providing a safe local port.

  • William Ricketts Sanctuary

William Ricketts Sanctuary - Temporary Closure

In June 2021, a severe cyclogenesis storm event impacted the Dandenong Ranges area, resulting in fallen trees and branches, blocked access to roads and tracks and damage to numerous assets.

William Ricketts Sanctuary was extensively damaged, with many sculptures, buildings, pathways and handrails destroyed by numerous large fallen trees.  Our highest priority is public and staff safety, and this site remains too dangerous to enter.

Immediately after the storms, Parks Victoria staff worked alongside emergency services to reopen roads and tracks to provide safe access for the community.  Parks Victoria rangers have since cleared more than 100 kilometres of roads, walking trails and picnic grounds in the Dandenong and Yarra Ranges.

The majority of storm impacted sites across the Dandenong Ranges have now re-opened, including all garden properties and the popular 1,000 Steps Walk.  This work has been further influenced by increased visitation (post-COVID restrictions lifting) and continued extreme weather events.

Storm recovery works have also commenced at William Ricketts Sanctuary, with perimeter fuel break clearing and hazardous tree removal occurring within the Sanctuary’s 13-hectare bushland block and its public car park area.  Boundary fencing repairs have also commenced.

We are continuing to work on a plan to reopen the 2-hectare visitor gallery section of the Sanctuary, but it is going to take longer than other sites due to the sheer scale of the damage and the artistic and cultural importance of the sculptures.

At this stage, there is no specific date when the Sanctuary will re-open, but it is not expected to be before 2024.

Please refer to the Parks Victoria website for up-to-date information relating to closures and change of conditions.
