    Dog Friendly Parks

The wet and warmer weather has brought paralysis ticks out in record numbers. Paralysis ticks are known in Coastal and near by Coastal areas and rainforest gullies.

Keep your dog on lead in permitted parks

Dogs are permitted in many parks and reserves provided they are under control and on leads at all times. Visitors should keep their dog on-lead except in designated off-lead areas. Keeping your dog on a lead ensures you both have a safe park visit.
    • Poison baits may be laid to control foxes or other feral animals. Baits can be fatal to dogs.
    • Even if your dog is friendly, other dogs may not be.
    • Your dog can catch parasites (such as fleas and ticks) from wildlife.
    • Snake bites are a real risk in natural areas such as parks.
    • Wildlife such as kangaroos and koalas will defend themselves if threatened by a dog and can cause significant injury to or the death of your dog.

    Dog-friendly code of conduct

    • Consider other park users and ensure that dogs are always kept under effective control.
    • Always carry a lead, even when in off-lead areas.
    • Bring a friend if you wish to walk with more than two dogs.
    • Ensure children are supervised whilst near dogs, as they are vulnerable to attack.
    • Ensure your dog’s identification, registration and vaccinations are up to date.
    • Minimise any disturbance to native fauna, including birdlife in the park.
    • Clean up after your dog and take all rubbish home.

  • Crossover Regional Park

Closure of Pilgrim Creek Road to vehicles

    Good afternoon,

Please be aware that new gates have been installed on Pilgrim Creek Road which is an access point into Crossover Regional Park.
The gates are the result of a joint project between the Rokeby & Crossover Friends Group, Baw Baw Shire Council, Parks Victoria and DELWP. The gates will prevent vehicular access to a section of Pilgrim Ck Track with the aim of improving safety for recreational users and reduce the incidence of illegal activity such as firewood removal and the dumping of rubbish. This section of Pilgrim Creek Track is now classed as Management Vehicle Only (MVO) access and the gates will be permanently closed on 15th October 2021. If you require vehicular access to the closed section of track please contact Park’s Victoria at info@parks.vic.gov.au or call 13 19 63 to discuss your requirements.
Currently the Parks Victoria Crossover Regional Park website page has almost no local information, but a change of conditions notification should be added.

The botanic garden will re-open at 10am on Tuesday 26 December 2023.

Spring 2023 - Visitor Information and Flowering Guide

Spring is the peak flowering season for the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden. Over the 12-week spring period, the garden bursts with a variety of colour.

Predicting flower blooms can be difficult, as they may not bloom at exactly the same time from year to year. The previous 12-months’ weather patterns, along with current weather conditions (heat, cold, rain & wind) affects the timing and duration of any bloom. Use the attached information (below) as a flowering guide but know there is always something new to see and discover on your next garden visit.

During the spring flowering season, we expect larger crowds, especially on weekends. Consider if you can visit mid-week or early in the morning when the garden may be quieter.

There is limited parking available on site. Additional parking is available next door at the Olinda Recreation Reserve, the former Olinda Golf Course, and close by at the Olinda Swimming Pool & Community House

If the car parks are full, consider visiting a different site.

If you want to avoid the crowds, visit the nearby Pirianda Garden, Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden, George Tindale Memorial Garden or R.J. Hamer Arboretum.

The Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden is open 7-days, 10am-4:30pm (last entry). Gates lock at 5pm.  Dogs, cats, and other pets are NOT permitted on site. Please leave bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and rollerblades at home. ‘Carry in, carry out’ all your rubbish, as bins are not provided.

Due to the garden’s location, shape, and topography; accessibility can be challenging. While the main pedestrian paths are a wide, sealed surface, some sections are quite steep and not fully accessible for visitors with diverse needs and abilities. Unassisted wheelchair access is not recommended.

The Garden Tour bus may be a better alternative for people with limited mobility. It provides a paid one-way/one-stop audio tour of the original garden (not the new Chelsea Australian Garden)

Seasonal changes ensure the garden is a year-round delight!

O'Toole Flat Camping Area and Gap Track Bridge CLOSED

    What?
Due to the failure of Gap Track Bridge over O'Toole Creek, the O'Toole Flat Camping Area and the section of Gap Track accessed by the Gap Track Bridge, are closed until further notice.
    Why?
This is to protect O'Toole Creek from damage by vehicles fording the creek without a bridge. O'Toole Creek flows directly into White Creek which is home to the critically endangered Spotted Tree Frog. Spotted Tree Frogs are threatened by loss of vegetation on creek banks, and by sediment in waterways.
    When will it be re-opened?
Gap Track Bridge, over O'Toole Creek, is funded for replacement under the Victorian Government's Asset Regeneration Program (High Risk Assets Capital Program). Construction is expected to begin in 2024. The area will be re-opened once the new bridge is in place.

Lake Eildon camping open for summer
Information released Wednesday 22 November, 2023

Three popular campgrounds at beautiful Lake Eildon on Taungurung Country will be open this summer school holidays.

The three Fraser Block campgrounds – Devil Cove, Candlebark and Lakeside – are nestled on the shores of the lake and have played host to generations of campers.

Recent water supply issues saw all three campgrounds closed over the winter – but Parks Victoria will be temporarily reopening with reduced services for the summer school holidays.

Around 100 sites will be available to book at the three campgrounds from 6 December, for dates from 20 December – 30 January.

“We’re really happy to reopen the campgrounds for the busy summer season, but there will be less sites than normal, and less facilities.” Parks Victoria Ranger Team Leader Jane Lloyd says.

“If you’re planning to come to Lake Eildon, please be aware some of the facilities will be closed, like the hot showers and barbecues at Lakeside Campground.”

Both Candlebark and Devil Cove campgrounds will have their showers and toilets open.

“Rangers monitor how things go closely and if there are any issues with the water supply we’ll let everyone know as quickly as possible,” says Jane Lloyd.

Campers at Lake Eildon can enjoy a whole world of watersports in a spectacular setting. Families can go swimming, canoeing, waterskiing, sailing and fishing in the shadow of the Victorian Alps, and enjoy bushwalking or cycling along a network of trails.

The campgrounds share the picture-perfect surroundings with kangaroos, wombats and a huge variety of beautiful birds. The Lake Eildon National Park is also an important home for a number of significant species including large forest owls (Powerful and Barking Owls), bats and the endangered Spotted Tree-frog and Brush-tailed Phascogale.

For more information about how to book camping at Lake Eildon visit our Booking Information page.

    What’s the problem?

Often called the Fraser Block, the three campgrounds – Lakeside, Devil Cove and Candlebark – are immensely popular with visitors to Lake Eildon. In their prime they offered easy access to the lake, with facilities like hot showers, drinking water, free gas barbecues, shelters and picnic areas.

Unfortunately, in recent times the campgrounds have begun to show their age, and last autumn the water system failed. Significant leaks were found which, if not managed appropriately, could impact on the water supply for visitors and campers in the park.

    What’s the plan?

  • Local Port of Port Campbell

Lower Landing closure Port Campbell jetty

The lower landing at the Port Campbell jetty will be closed from Friday 5th May, as a recent independent engineering inspection found it is unsafe and needs to be replaced.

Vessel launching and retrieving via the crane is not impacted by the lower landing closure and remains open and accessible.

The upper deck of the jetty remains open and accessible for community and visitor use.

Passengers on vessels, and swimmers wishing to enter/exit the water at the jetty will need to use the ladder at the crane.

We know this will be disappointing for people who use the lower landing, but it has reached the end of its serviceable life in the Southern Ocean conditions and poses a serious risk to public safety.

Parks Victoria has started design work for a replacement lower landing and will keep the community informed about how it progresses over the coming months.

We thank you for your understanding as we work towards providing a safe local port.

  • Mordialloc Pier

Removing hazards to navigation at Mordialloc Creek entrance

Maintenance dredging is conducted at Mordialloc Creek entrance to remove navigation hazards.

The dredged sand will be deposited on the adjoining beach south of the Creek entrance where it can provide benefit to the beach profile.

Coastal sands often contain fine particles and organic material, mostly seaweed, which can sometimes give it a dark colour and mild odour.  While the freshly dredged sand may look unpleasant when it first comes out of the water, after several days’ exposure to the air and sun, the sand will return to the normal colour and lose any odour.

Suspended particles in the water may create some local turbidity, but this will also dissipate and settle quickly once dredging ends.

Dredging may take between 2 and 4 days depending on weather conditions and the quantity of sand to be moved.

Mordialloc Creek entrance depth monitoring survey

The most recent depth monitoring survey of the Mordialloc Creek entrance is provided below.

    Mordialloc Creek survey information disclaimer:
Parks Victoria does not warrant that the information provided is accurate and up to date.

All boat operators are advised to navigate with caution, as conditions can change quickly and sand can accumulate across the entrance and cause reduced depth within the channel.

The information provided is intended as a guide only and does not replace the judgement of the operator of the vessel.  Boat operators should be familiar with Notices to Mariners published on the Victorian Regional Channels Authority website and are advised to check weather and tidal conditions prior to accessing the entrance.

Depth shown is to Chart Datum.

This survey will be replaced when a new one becomes available.

  • Patterson River

Removing hazards to navigation at Patterson River entrance

Maintenance dredging is conducted at Patterson River entrance to remove navigation hazards.

The dredged sand will be deposited on the adjoining beach south of the river entrance where it can provide benefit to the beach profile.

Dredging may take between 4 and 8 days depending on weather conditions and the quantity of sand to be moved.

For more information, please refer to the Community Update sheet below.

  • William Ricketts Sanctuary

William Ricketts Sanctuary - Temporary Closure

Parks Victoria has fully re-opened 14 of the 17 parks impacted by a severe cyclogenesis storm event in the Dandenong and Yarra Ranges on June 9, 2021.  The storm resulted in fallen trees and branches, blocked access to roads and tracks and damage to numerous assets.

William Ricketts Sanctuary was extensively damaged, with many sculptures, buildings, pathways and handrails destroyed by numerous large fallen trees. Our highest priority is public and staff safety, and this site remains too dangerous to enter.

We are continuing to work on a plan to reopen William Ricketts Sanctuary, but it is going to take longer than other sites due to the sheer scale of the damage and the artistic and cultural importance of the sculptures.

Storm recovery works have commenced at William Ricketts Sanctuary. Initial perimeter fuel break clearing, fallen timber and hazardous tree removal works have occurred within the Sanctuary’s 13-hectare bushland block, the 2-hectare sculpture gallery and public car park. Further fallen timber, debris and boundary fencing repairs will commence shortly.

At this stage, there is no specific date when the Sanctuary will re-open, but it is not expected to be before 2024.

We are grateful to the local community, our stakeholders and visitors for their patience and continued priority to keep safe by staying outside of this closed area.

Please continue to refer to the Parks Victoria website for up-to-date information relating to closures and change of conditions.
