Camping area at Cathedral Range temporarily closed
Thursday 30 May, 2019
Following monitoring and safety assessment, a pedestrian suspension bridge providing the only access to Neds Gully Camping Area in Cathedral Range State Park has been temporarily closed.
Neds Gully provides walk-in camping and cannot be accessed by vehicle, therefore the camping area is also closed and no bookings can currently be made.
Alternative camping is available at nearby Cooks Mill Camping Area, 2.5km away in the Park.
Neds Gully Camping Area is also the starting point for walking tracks in the northern half of Cathedral Range State Park. During this temporary closure, the northern circuit tracks can be accessed from Little River Track via Cooks Mill Camping Area.
Parks Victoria anticipates the bridge will be replaced and Neds Gully Camping Area will reopen in late 2019.
Quotes attributed Andrew Sawicki, Parks Victoria Area Chief Ranger:
“The piles supporting the pedestrian suspension bridge are no longer considered structurally safe so the bridge needs to be replaced.”
“This closure coincides with the lowest visitation time of the year in the park.”
“Parks Victoria manages $1.8 billion in assets across more than 2000 visitor sites. To ensure public safety, assets are monitored internally by park staff, and assessments by technical specialists are completed where required.”
