Historic Kerferd Road Pier upgraded and open

Thursday 29 August, 2019

A much-loved icon of Port Phillip Bay, Kerferd Road Pier has reopened for the community, following the Victorian Government’s $1.75 million upgrade.

One of the few timber piers built in Port Phillip Bay for recreation, it holds significant historical and architectural significance. Heritage listed, it has been a hub for the community since it was built in 1889. Now fishers, walkers and boaters can once again, flock to the pier.

A key architectural feature of the pier, the iconic light poles remain and the light fittings have been upgraded to LED, to improve energy efficiency and reduce maintenance costs. The works were designed to ensure the special historical and architectural aspects of the pier are maintained.

New piles, decking and handrails, will extend the life of the heritage listed pier so it continues to impress visitors for at least the next 25 years.

In total, 95 piles and approximately 60 per cent of the timber decking was replaced. Where possible, all good timber from the old pier was reinstalled, with other timber re-used by the City of Port Philip.

Constructed in 1889 during the boom years of Port Phillip Bay foreshore development, the pier was one of several projects built for recreational use, enabling visitors to enjoy a walk and take in the fresh sea air and water view. Around the same time, the sea wall was erected, Beaconsfield Parade was developed into a promenade, and numerous sea baths were built.

Parks Victoria manages and preserves the Kerferd Road Pier as well as more than 3,000 historic places and objects across the state for the community to enjoy.

Quotes attributable to Parks Victoria, Regional Director Melbourne Marine and Maritime, Jo Richards:

“The repairs to Kerferd Road Pier preserve its historical and architectural significance and ensure the community can enjoy this icon safely for years to come.”
