Its out with the old and in with the loo

Visitors heading to the historic Ritchie’s Hut in the Howqua Hills Historic Area, Alpine National Park these Easter holidays can look forward to a brand new toilet.

The new toilet replaces an old timber pit toilet which although in character with the historic area did not meet modern contemporary standards.

The logistics required to replace the toilet were quite complicated.

A helicopter flew in all of the equipment, structure and tools to build the new toilet- a far cry from the days when the original Ritchie’s Hut was built.

In addition, the design of the toilet had to be tailored to the site. Due to the remoteness of the location and lack of vehicle access, Parks Victoria decided on a ‘Side Shifter’ design, which consists of two pods. When one pod gets full, the toilet structure, which is on rollers, is moved to the side and shifted over the top of the new pod. The old pod is then capped off and the new pod is ready to use.

Parks Victoria Ranger Fleur Smith said it was an incredible team effort utilising staff from both Parks Victoria and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning from the Western Alps District, Mt Beauty and Beechworth.

“Providing basic facilities like a toilet in remote locations requires careful planning every step of the way, from design to installation.”

“We even had a group of enthusiastic visitors happy to take part and help us move the structure and pods to the site.”

“It makes projects like this very interesting and fun to work on when we can use new technologies that still complement the park surroundings and help service our visitors better”, added Fleur.
