Autumn Firewood season opening in Robinvale
Friday 28 February, 2020
The Autumn Firewood Collection Season for 2020 starts across Victoria on Sunday 1 March and closes on Tuesday 30 June.
Domestic firewood on public land is a limited resource that needs to be carefully managed. Future collection from Parks Victoria managed land will be subject to access and supply.
Due to the supply of firewood being exhausted there will be no domestic firewood collection at Mildura. Residents of the Rural City of Mildura are eligible to collect firewood in the Robinvale firewood collection areas.
In some instances, further wood removal from the River Red Gum parks would have a negative impact on the health of the forest environment.
Many animals rely on fallen timber and tree hollows for habitat. Crevices under logs and hollows in trees provide safe places for mammals, reptiles, birds and invertebrates to live and are the perfect place to protect their young from predators. Fallen timber and tree hollows also have value far beyond basic shelter, providing food resources and recycling nutrients in the ecosystem as it decays.
Three sites will open in the Robinvale collection this autumn. More information and updates, including interactive maps showing designated collection areas will be available on www.ffm.vic.gov.au/firewood from 1 March.
Access to firewood in Robinvale will only be available to residents of the Mildura Rural City and Swan Hill Rural City.
Alternative sources of firewood include public firewood collection areas across Victoria or commercial suppliers.

Quotes attributable to Parks Victoria District Manager, Ian Curwood:
“We take a zero-tolerance approach to illegal firewood collection, given the negative impacts it has on forest health, wildlife habitat, public safety and the sustainability of firewood resources that local communities rely on. Most people follow the rules, however, it’s important for anyone collecting firewood on public land to be aware of where, when and what firewood can be collected to avoid significant penalties”.
“If you suspect anyone of illegal firewood activities please contact Parks Victoria on 13 1963.”
“We want to remind the public that firewood can only be taken from designated collection areas in parks during approved times and for personal use only and cannot be sold."
