Tuesday 24 November, 2020

The man admitted to spray painting trees, rocks and damaging a rock shelter which is of cultural significance to the Dja Dja Wurrung people, the Traditional Owners of Central Victoria. The man was identified by evidence left at the crime scene. The man was ordered to pay costs to repair the damage.

Visitors to the park came across the graffiti during a regular visit in September.

“Vandalism is not an act of respect and is not to be tolerated when it comes to caring for Country and its visitors.”

Quotes attributable to Daniel McLaughlin Parks Victoria Regional Director
“It’s disappointing and frustrating that this act of vandalism occurred in Kooyora State Park. Our parks are protected to preserve their unique cultural and natural values and deliberately causing damage is extremely disappointing.

“We are pleased that the offender was caught and charged and welcome the fine that will contribute to the considerable cost of cleaning up. Parks Victoria and Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation are working together to rehabilitate the damage.”
