Alpine Discovery Days at Bogong High Plains
Tuesday 19 January, 2021
Learn about the area’s rich history and natural beauty
Roving volunteer guides will be ready and waiting for visitors to discover Victoria’s Alps, with stories about the rich history and stunning alpine wetlands of the Bogong High Plains.
On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays during January, and over the Easter long weekend in April, two knowledgeable local volunteer guides will be stationed at Wallace’s Hut. Visitors are invited to drop by on these days any time during 10am to 2pm.
Parks Victoria has arranged for the volunteer guides to be present during popular holiday times, to share stories about the history of the oldest cattlemen’s hut in the Victorian Alps and teach people about the nearby rare alpine wetlands.
This offer is free, and bookings are not required.
Parks Victoria’s volunteer guides will be based at Wallace’s Hut just 700 metres from the Wallace’s Heritage Trail Carpark on the Great Alpine Road, nine kilometres from the Falls Creek Alpine Resort.
Please remember to bring a water bottle, be sun smart, stay COVID safe, take only photos and leave only footprints.
For dates and more information about the Alpine Discovery Days, visit the Parks Victoria website, www.parks.vic.gov.au/places-to-see/parks/alpine-national-park/things-to-do/alpine-discovery-days.
This initiative is funded through the Victorian Government’s $105.6 million Victoria’s Great Outdoors program.
Quotes attributed to Yohanna Aurisch, Ranger, Parks Victoria:
“Last year’s spring and summer rainfall has resulted in an amazing display of Alpine wildflowers across the entire Bogong High Plains.
The beauty and rich history of this area is enough to entice most visitors, but it’s also a fantastic cool getaway on a hot day, being 10 to 12 degrees cooler than down in the valley.
Our friendly volunteer guides are keen to share their local knowledge and passion for this special place, so please drop by.”
