Yarra Bend Park netball courts and pavilion: Project update
Monday 7 August, 2023
Works to redistribute a large amount of soil at Yarra Bend Park are set to begin this month, part of the final stage of works to activate new netball courts and a shared-use pavilion at Fairlea Reserve.
The construction of these facilities in late 2022 produced a large amount of soil. This needs to be redistributed so the community has safe access to the new facilities.
The soil will be used to create elevated viewing mounds around the new netball courts and Fairlea Reserve, which will provide visitors with a great view of the game on weekends.
Parks Victoria is working with Yarra City Council to ensure the relocation of site soil is undertaken in accordance with relevant statutory requirements. This includes ensuring the soil is relocated safely and that established trees in the area are protected.
Parks Victoria has obtained the required planning permit from Yarra City Council to complete these works, which are expected to start this month.
Subject to on-ground and construction industry conditions, the relocation of the site soil and associated landscaping works are expected to be completed in spring 2023.
The new courts include competition-grade lighting, bike racks, pathways and increased car parking.
The new pavilion - located between the netball courts and the Fairlea West Oval - includes female friendly change rooms, spectator viewing areas, a kitchen and meeting rooms.
Once available, the netball courts and shared-use pavilion will provide local netballers with a great base for training, community netball and competitions, as well as state tournaments.
The pavilion will also service cricket, soccer and flyfishing users, and the courts will be available for school and public use outside of training and competition hours, with one of the courts also line-marked for basketball.
