82 Bend Camping Area 1 (GUNBOWER STATE FOREST, Gunbower National Park)

Enjoy swimming or fishing in the Murray River or relax among the River Red Gums at 82 Bend Camping Area. Bring a picnic or barbecue, or spend the night immersed in nature. No fees or bookings apply. This is a dispersed bush camping area with no facilities. Campers must be self-sufficient. Access is via unsealed roads suitable for 2WD vehicles in dry weather only. A 4WD vehicle is recommended. This dispersed camping area can accommodate tents, caravans and motor homes.

Visitor Tips: Do not park, camp or rest under or near large trees, like River Red Gums. Whole trees and branches may fall at any time without warning and swing away from the tree.

Rivers may have fast currents, low visibility, underwater objects, shallow areas, unstable banks, drop offs and deep holes. Do not dive or jump in. Always actively supervise children in or near water.

Fishing and boating in the Murray River must comply with NSW regulations. Victorian regulations apply to all other waterways in the park.

Please practice minimal impact camping and take all camping gear and rubbish away when you leave. Campsites must be at least 20m from the riverbank. Digging steps into riverbanks is illegal and can cause erosion and landslides.

River water is not suitable for consumption.

Campfires are permitted if it is not a Total Fire Ban day, and: a 3 metre area around the fire is cleared of anything flammable; at least 10 litres of water is available for immediate use; and an adult is in attendance at all times. Fires must be no larger than 1m across and contained in a pit at least 30cm deep. Always extinguish fires with water not soil. A fire is safe to leave when it is cool to touch.

Firewood collection is permitted for on-site use only and must not be removed from the park. Collect only dead wood from the ground. Firewood must be cut on site and not dragged.

No bins are provided. Please take your rubbish away. Report illegal dumping to 13 1963.

82 Bend Camping Area is in the Mallee fire district. Bushfire safety is a personal responsibility. For up to date information on bushfires in Victoria call the VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226, download the VicEmergency app, visit www.emergency.vic.gov.au or tune into a local radio station. Check the forecast fire danger before leaving home. Consider not visiting forest or bushland on stormy days or days of high bushfire risk.

Change of Conditions

Nature being nature, sometimes conditions can change at short notice. It’s a good idea to check this page ahead of your visit for any updates.

Gunbower National Park closed due to flooding

High river levels and environmental watering within Gunbower Island are inundating camping areas and affecting access to and via River Track. Roads and visitor sites are temporarily closed until floodwaters recede and sites can be assessed as safe. Tree-fall may be an ongoing issue with wet soils and strong winds. For safety reasons, do not drive through flood waters or past road closures.

This park has been impacted by recent significant weather events and is partially closed.

For public safety, Parks Victoria will close areas impacted by severe weather.  Closures are necessary while assessments and works are undertaken to remove risk and repair damage before reopening for visitors.  For your safety, please avoid these impacted areas.
During your visit to the Murray, you may see smaller areas fenced off or areas blocked by bollards. These areas have been closed due to safety and protection reasons. Please do not enter, remove fixtures or drive beyond them.
Visitors should be aware that river banks have been eroded by flood waters and may be unstable. Holes may have opened up in the ground and should be avoided. Trees along the river banks could be unstable. There is always a risk of trees dropping limbs.
Parks Victoria is working with Traditional Owners and other government agencies to manage the temporary levee in Echuca’s west. Visitors must not interfere with the levee.

All camping areas between Torrumbarry Weir Road and Young Road remain closed
