Cheviot Hill Heritage Site (Point Nepean National Park)

Cheviot Hill is located within Point Nepean National Park and is the park’s highest point. There is a viewing platform 500m west of Cheviot Hill, that overlooks Cheviot Beach, the site where former Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared while swimming without a trace in December 1967. A memorial granite plinth on the approach to the viewing platform honours the legacy of this tragedy. Access to Cheviot Beach is not permitted for safety and conservation reasons. Cheviot Hill is named after Victoria's worst shipwreck, the SS Cheviot, which hit a reef in 1887 during storm conditions; 35 of the 59 passengers drowned.

The Happy Valley loop track starts here and meanders through Moonah Woodland where you will discover the remnants of the Happy Valley Army Barracks. The short, but narrow loop walk is a great way to get amongst nature.

Snakes are active in the warmer months, so please stay on the existing paths to avoid any unnecessary encounters.

Before you visit check the Fire Danger Rating and for days of Total Fire Ban at www.emergency.vic.gov.au, on the VicEmergency smartphone app or call the VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226.
