Southern Lookout (Kooyoora State Park)

Southern Lookout (Kooyoora State Park)

The southern Lookout walking track provides the adventurous an opportunity to wander an ancient landscape filled with natural stone monoliths. The site features a 1.8km track with a 1.5 hr return walk starting from the lower Kooyoora Picnic Area. Those who tackle this memorable walk will be rewarded with an iconic lookout placed on a jutting rocky outcrop that provides spectacular panoramic views of the Inglewood district. When the area has experienced a rain event, it comes alive with flowing streams and miniature waterfalls. As part of the important cultural and environmental landscape at Kooyoora State Park the walk presents a unique opportunity to see wildlife, flora and culture not found in other parts of Victoria.

The walk can be tricky in some spots and requires a moderate level of dexterity. Take all rubbish away for recycling or disposal. Summer temperatures can be extreme, and walkers may prefer to visit in cooler months. Carry plenty of water and drink often. Wear sturdy footwear, a hat, and light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing. Avoid walking during the hottest part of the day or take advantage of the shade. It is easy to get lost in certain sections, so stick to the paths and do not walk alone. Watch out for snakes which are more active in spring, summer and autumn. If you see a snake, stand still and don’t panic. Snakes nearly always move away when they feel footstep vibrations.

Toilets, a rotunda and picnic tables can be found at the start of the walk in the Kooyoora Picnic Area. Bring your own water. Store food and waste securely, to avoid attracting animals. There are no bins, please dispose of your rubbish in a thoughtful manner.

The area is prone to Bushfires in warmer months. Bushfire safety is a personal responsibility. For up to date information on bushfires in Victoria call the VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226, download the VicEmergency app, visit or tune into a local radio station.
