Maits Rest Refurbishment

Maits Rest is currently undergoing refurbishment of all 800m of the current loop walk, and replacing the current boardwalk, bridges and lookout with new structures to better protect the environment and provide better visitor experiences.

Works complete - Late June 2020
Due to fires in NSW, supply chains for timber have been impacted.
This has now been resolved, and works to the elevated boardwalks and infrastructure is underway

Key information

  • The refurbishment will introduce larger platforms that invite visitors to gather and share experiences
  • The infrastructure is designed to better protect the forest systems through raised platforms, keeping visitors on trails and providing corridors for animals to move through the forest safely
  • There will also be improvements to the sites walking tracks, pedestrian bridges, viewing platforms, carpark and visitor interpretation signage

Other information

  • Nearby Melba Gully is the recommended alternate site to visit whilst Maits Rest is closed. Picnic, BBQ and toilet facilities are located at Melba Gully, along with the famed glow worms
  • Maits Rest attracts over 150,000 people a year to one of Victoria’s wettest locations
  • The Otway Black Snail calls Maits Rest home – endemic to the Otways, it is one of only five species of carnivorous snails in Australia
