Mallacoota and surrounds bushfire recovery

Parks Victoria is reconstructing damaged campgrounds and visitor facilities throughout Croajingolong National Park and around Mallacoota following major bushfire damage in summer 2019/20. The major recovery work includes rebuilding the Thurra River bridge providing access to Point Hicks Lighthouse Reserve and rebuilding campgrounds that were destroyed.

 

What is being delivered

  • Repairs to Day Visitor Sites such as South West Arm, Genoa River
  • Repairs to jetties around Mallacoota Lake 
  • Reconstruct bridge at Thurra River
  • Reconstruct the Thurra River and Mueller Inlet campgrounds
  • Reconstruct Wingan Inlet campground beach access boardwalk
  • Repairs to McKenzie River Rainforest Walk
  • Replacement of toilets at Captain Creek day visitor area and jetty.

 

Recent completed works include

  • Repairs to steps & access track at Genoa Falls
  • Genoa Peak Walking Track: repairs to first lookout, new steps to the lookout, new picnic table and track maintenance
  • The Narrows Walking Track: rebuilding of bridges and track maintenance along path to Captain Creek day visitor area
  • Hazardous tree works and track maintenance on walking track from Pebbly Beach to Shipwreck Creek
  • Hazardous tree removal, new signage and bollards at Wingan Inlet campground
  • Hazardous tree removal, toilet repairs, new signage and bollards at Shipwreck Creek campground
  • Removed burnt infrastructure
  • Site cleanup and hazardous tree works at several day visitor sites including Cape Horn, Allans Head, Cemetery Bight, Goanna Bay, The Narrows, Sandy Point and Sou West Arm around Mallacoota Lake.

 

 

Expected project duration and key dates

 

Works commence – mid 2020

Works completed:
Mallacoota – mid 2021
Thurra River Bridge and campground – end 2022

 

Project funding

Victorian Government Gippsland Tourism Recovery Package 

  • $2.8 million - improving facilities around Mallacoota Inlet
  • $3.85 million - improving access to Point Hicks lighthouse 

 

Insurance

  • $1.4 million – Mallacoota and surrounds recovery work
  • $5 million – Thurra bridge and campground
