Key information
As of Monday 25 May, Middle Brighton Pier is closed to all vehicles and pedestrians due to risk of structural failure. Further engineering assessments are currently underway to determine the extent of repairs required to reopen the 1977 section of Middle Brighton Pier, extending from the pier entrance to marina gates.
Latest engineering assessments revealed significant structural failures of the pier, indicating it is not safe to walk or drive on. Structural concerns include failed concrete deck planks on the 1977 section. This closure follows prior closure of the 1938 section (April 2020), connecting the pier to the breakwater.
Frequently asked questions
How long will Middle Brighton Pier be closed? The duration of Middle Brighton Pier’s closure will be determined once the full scope of works is known and contractor appointed via a tender process. Further structural assessments are currently underway. A timeframe of repair work and key milestones will be communicated once known.
Is funding available to repair Middle Brighton Pier? Yes. Funding to restore access to the main section of the pier comes as part of the Victorian Government’s Building Works package for projects to get thousands of people back to work. Parks Victoria is working towards repairing and re-opening Middle Brighton Pier as soon as possible.
Are there alternative options to access the Royal Brighton Yacht Club marina? Currently there are no alternative land-based access options to the marina or breakwater. Parks Victoria will continue to work with stakeholders to understand implications of this closure and possible alternative access options.
Will repair of the 1938 section be included in the upcoming works?
Parks Victoria’s priority is to reopen the 1977 section of Middle Brighton Pier, reinstating access to the Royal Brighton Marina and allowing safe access for pier visitors and authorised vehicles.
